Join me for Book Club Friday, Oct 2 as we discuss Priya Parker’s first book, The Art of Gathering. Register at the link in the bio.
📖Last night’s author talk with @priyaparker on her new book The Art of Fighting, hosted by the amazing Claudia Vega of @whosebooks and @readwitharco was incredible. Parker dropped so many brilliant nuggets! Also, her fit was 🔥 ⚡️She talked so eloquently about something I feel passionately about- conflict is necessary for connection. 🤫Parker described the utter shock of friends and family when her parents divorced because they never really fought. This taught Parker that “there’s loss in avoidance.” 🫱🏼‍🫲🏽Conflict can be hard and messy, yes, but it can often signal how important a relationship is to you. Parker repeated several times “conflict is relevance.” We fight about things that are important to us with people who are important to us. And fighting is a skill that can be learned and honed. 📚Reminder that we’re reading Parker’s 1st book, The Art of Gathering for Book Club meeting Friday, Oct 2 @7pm. Link in the bio. I can’t wait to share more about this conversation and the connections Parker drew between gathering and fighting!
Is your algorithm trying to tell you something? Does your nervous system need a makeover? I got you!
Hugo wants you to know you’re worthy and loved. He also wants to know if you have any food. Or would like to scratch his butt.
But mostly he wants you to know you’re a lovely, perfect human.

Join me Friday, Oct 2 to read The Art of Gathering by @priyaparker. I chose this book for this season when we’re preparing to do more gathering and celebrating. 🔗 in the bio It just so happens the author has a new book, The Art of Fighting coming out this month! I’m really looking forward to reading it.
Where do you sit when you go to therapy? You don’t have to overthink it! 🪑Option 1: ask the therapist 🛋️Option 2: wherever you want. I personally don’t care where I sit. I’ve sat on the floor with clients before. What matters is- are we connecting? Are we a good fit? Do you feel safe? What other questions do you have about therapy? Put them in the comments👇🏼!
People ask all the time “do you get tired of listening to people’s problems all day?” 1. I don’t feel like that’s what I do and 2. No. I love my job and being with clients in any capacity is easily my favorite part. I trained specifically to be able to be with people as they discuss the hardest parts of their lives. Doing admin or notes on the other hand? Ugh, serenity NOW!
Let’s talk about boundaries by talking about my dog. Boundaries are things YOU do, they are actions and rules for YOU. You cannot control or dictate others’ behaviors, so we set boundaries to allow you to control your reaction. So let’s use my dog Hugo as an example. Hugo has shown aggression towards other dogs in what seems to be a clear attempt to protect his home and us, his family. It is not setting a boundary to tell him not to attack other dogs. That would be fruitless. Setting boundaries with Hugo means we change OUR behavior. We do not let other dogs in our home, or if we do Hugo is secured in another room and does not make contact. This ensures both HIS safety AND the safety of other dogs. What does this look like in your life? You cannot stop someone from texting you. But you can block them. You can’t stop someone from expecting immediate responses to texts. But you can only respond when convenient for you. You cannot stop someone from talking about their politics at the holiday table. But you can ask them to stop and remove yourself if they don’t. Expecting someone to change may be setting you both up for failure. Change how you respond. It sounds simple, but you may be amazed at the results.
A few years ago I read a book by Deb Dana where she talked about glimmers- tiny moments in a day that brought her little micro-doses of joy. These glimmers are as important in life and therapy as reflecting out difficult experiences. While hanging out with my kiddo this weekend I rediscovered this video I took over the winter holidays. It had us cracking up. Hope it brings you a tiny bit of joy.
